Originally released on Fox in 2002, the science-fiction series,Firefly, was prematurely martyred after just a single season, truncating what many would soon deem as a show full of potential. The show has since risen to cult status, a great testament to its quality, and is frequently ranked among the best cult shows of modern times. Talks about bringing the show back have swirled around in recent times, with stars includingAlan Tudykhaving their say on the chances. Now, another of its stars,Morena Baccarin, best recognized these days for her role in CBS’sFire Countryand its much anticipated spin-offSheriff Country, is weighing in on the prospects of rebooting the beloved show, over a decade after it was cancelled too soon.
Baccarin recently made an appearance on theInside of You with Michael Rosenbaumpodcast to discuss recent developments in her career. When asked if there was a chance thatFireflyor its follow-up movie,Serenity, would be rebooted sometime in the near future, the Emmy-nominated actress gave a logical response, explaining how scheduling conflicts would pose the biggest obstacle to making a reboot a possibility. “There’s always talk. There’s always people asking about it,” she said, adding, “I’ll put it this way. Like, is there going to be a ‘Firefly’ reboot with all of us in it? Live action?I seriously doubt it. You know, that’s a lot of different careers and different people that you have to negotiate with and make work and all that, you know? Schedules and whatnot. Could there be like a comic book, a thing or what? Maybe. I don’t know.”

Reboots are often a dicey affair as new attempts, if not properly executed, risk tarnishing a beloved legacy and altering an experience that fans hold dear. That’s exactly why Baccarin believesFireflymight be better left untouched. Further sharing her thoughts on the reboot, she added, “Part of me would be excited to revisit that world, and part of me is also a little bit like, I love it so much where it is that I’m worried about reopening that door, you know?” OnFirefly, Baccarin played Inara Serra, one of the show’s nine main characters, all of whom were recently honored with anew Funko Pop collection.
A ‘Firefly’ Podcast Is Coming Soon
While a reboot might seem far-fetched and perhaps unnecessary, as some would argue, loyal fans of the franchise have something new to look forward to soon. A few years ago, Tudyk and co-starNathan Fillionteased that they were both working on a podcast that would feature several stars of the franchise and sci-fi stars in general. However, nothing else had been revealed about it until recently at the Denver FanExpo where Collider’sMaggie Lovittmoderated a panel. Following a fan question about the status of the podcast, Tudyk revealed thatthe podcast has recorded a few episodesalready. “We’ve done a lot of them. We have, like, a bank of Once, We Were Spacemen,” he said. However, regarding when the podcast would launch, Tudyk said it was dependent on Fillion, adding, “Nathan’s in charge of that. He’s kind of in charge of everything. He’s the captain. So, once the captain lets me know what’s going on with that… As it stands, I just show up and do my best.” Hopefully, it launches soon.
As always, stay tuned for updates.
