Jack Quaidmade a name for himself inThe Boysas Hughie Campbell, but when he’s not trying to take down the Seven, he’s getting his “superhero” fix in movies likeNovocaine. And now the Paramount film has found streaming success! On Paramount+,Novocainehas nabbed the number one spot, and you canwatch the romance film disguised as an action-comedy. Directed byRobert OlsenandDan Berk, the film follows Nate (Quaid), a man who cannot feel pain, as he tries to save the girl of his dreams from a bank robbery gone wrong.
Nate works with Sherry (Amber Midthunder), who attempts to get him out of his shell and tries to live his life, because Nate has a rare medical condition that makes it impossible for him to feel pain, and he’s so afraid of accidentally hurting himself that he doesn’t even eat solid food. You know, in case he bites his tongue off and doesn’t know that he’s done it. With all of his tattoos (becausewhy not get a bunch of tattoos if you’re able to’t feel the pain) and a sweet love for Sherry,Novocaineends up being a perfect blend of romance and action, all thanks to Quaid’s charm as Nate.

The film also starsRay NicholsonandJacob Batalon, andit is a very fun ride. If you couldn’t feel pain, imagine just how unhinged fighting would be. The other guy would punch you all he wants. You won’t take the hit badly because you may’t feel it! And yes, that does mean that the movie ends up withsome gnarly fight sequenceslike Quaid’s hand going straight into a deep fryer. Mixed with the fact that Midthunder is, as fans know, someone who can also hold her own in an action film thanks to her work in thePredatorprequel,Prey, it is a perfect blend of action, romance, and comedic timing.
BeforeNovocainetook over as a fun and original action movie, Quaid starred in a different kind of original film withCompanion.TheDrew Hancockfilm featured Quaid as a man who buys his own “companion” to be his girlfriend. Iris (Sophie Thatcher) doesn’t know she’s a robot, and the rest is a murderous tale as old as time. It cemented Quaid as one of our more interesting actors with his choices, and it is proof that he’s willing totake a chance on original workand stories, especially if there is a lot of gore around.

You can see Quaid inNovocaine, now streaming on Paramount+.
