Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Versehad a very good night at the Annie Awards this weekend. The film won in all seven categories in which it was nominated including Best Animated Feature, Best Director (Bob Persichetti,Peter RamseyandRodney Rothman) and Best Writing (Rothman andPhil Lord). The big victory forSpider-Versebodes very well for the film’s chances at the Oscars. In four of the last five years, the winner of the Annie Award for Best Picture has taken home the Best Animated Feature Oscar (the exception was whenHow to Train Your Dragon 2won the Annie Award andBig Hero 6won the Oscar).

However, none of the Oscar-nominated animated films came away without at least one award. PerTHR, “Disney/Pixar’sIncredibles 2collected two awards for music, presented to Oscar-winning composerMichael Giacchino, and storyboarding.Isle of Dogswon in the voice acting category, which was awarded toBryan Cranstonfor his role as Chief. Disney’sRalph Breaks the Internetgrabbed an Annie for animated effects, and GKIDS’Miraiwon the Annie for best independent animated feature.”

So what does this mean for the Oscars?Spider-Verseis still the heavy favorite to win Best Animated Feature, but I can’t shake the feeling that Oscar voters are going to be wary of awarding a superhero film the prize. That being said, they’ve already done it once forBig Hero 6, so it’s not that much of a leap to give the award toSpider-Verse. The film has all the critical acclaim, and it’s a box office smash. Furthermore, it’s not clear who would be the upset pick. MaybeIsle of DogsorIncredibles 2could take the award due to the pedigree of directors Wes Anderson and Brad Bird, respectively, but right now, I’m going to place my bet onSpider-Verse.
