Just as Collider Video predicted last month,SplitstarAnya Taylor-Joyhas signed on to star inEdgar Wright’s psychological horror-thrillerLast Night in Soho.Varietybrought official word on Monday, reporting that she’ll play “one of the leads” in the film, which may suggest a larger ensemble of some kind.
Krysty Wilson-Cairns(Penny Dreadful) wrote the screenplay, but plot details are being kept under wraps for now. All we know is that the story is set in London’s Soho district, and that’s where filming will take place this summer. The film will be a co-production between Focus Features and Working Title.

Wanna know how Collider Video got the jump on this one? In late November/early December, I heard from a good source that Wright had his eye on Taylor-Joy for his next film, but I didn’t know what that film was. Would it beGrasshopper Jungle? One of the animated movies he’s been developing? His sci-fi movieCollider(great title!)? I did a quick search on Twitter for their names, and found this May 2017 tweet from Wright in response to a user who’d asked the director who he’d love to work with in the near future.
Wright had recently seen her work inSplit, which he called “brilliant.” So at that point, I knew the director was a fan and had publicly confessed to wanting to work with her, but the question was, would her schedule allow for such a collaboration? I had my doubts… until Jan. 8, that is. That’s the day thatTHRbroke the news thatKaren Gillan(Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) would star in the assassin movieGunpowder Milkshake. See, Taylor-Joy had that role on lock-down for several months, so when I read that the project was moving forward with another talented young actress, I knew Taylor-Joy had dropped out – and likely for something bigger and better. I finally put all my cards out on the tableon MovieTalkon January 22nd (watch the clip below), and sure enough, two weeks later, here we are.

Even though I know very little regarding the plot of Wright’s next movie, I’m confident that Taylor-Joy is a strong choice for the project, as she’s a very talented and expressive actress who can convey a lot of emotion with just her eyes. Genre fans are familiar with the actress, who broke out inThe Witchand had her first hit withSplit, which of course led to a (truncated) role in the newly-released sequelGlass. Taylor-Joy also starred alongsideOlivia Cookeand the lateAnton Yelchinin the indie movieThoroughbreds, of which Wright was a big fan. And don’t forget that barring unforeseen circumstances, Taylor-Joy will soon be seen inJosh Boone’sNew Mutants, which isfinallyslated to hit theaters this summer following several delays.
Wright, who continues to develop a sequel to his hit movieBaby Driverwith Ansel Elgort poised to return, is represented by CAA, who also reps Taylor-Joy along with Troika.
