While Marvel Studios is keeping this “culmination event” under lock and key, therearesome curious reveals in this here trailer that give us a better idea of what’s going on in theAvengers: Infinity Warsequel. That said, there were shots made specifically for theInfinity Wartrailer that never ended up in the movie, designed to throw fans off the scent of the film’s super-bummer ending. So proceed with caution.

The Past Is Key

This trailer opens with footage from 2008’sIron Manin black-and-white as we hear Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) speaking to Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow), likely in message form as we last saw Tony and Pepper’s connection cutting out duringInfinity Warwhen Tony was flying up to space. It’s then interspersed with a lot of footage from earlier films—Captain America: The First Avenger,Thor,Captain America: Civil War, and of courseInfinity War. But the driving force in the early portion of the trailer is a focus on the OG MCU. The heroes that made up the Marvel Cinematic Universe before the firstAvengersfilm, which just so happen to make up the Avengers team that remains after the Thanos snap.

Rumors have swirled thatEndgamewill have a time travel element of sorts, with the characters going back to the Battle of New York, and I think it’s no coincidence that this trailer plays so heavily on the nostalgia for Phase One. Even if there’s no time travel to be found, the beginning of the journeys for Tony, Steve, Thor, and Black Widow will no doubt prove integral to how they respond to the events ofInfinity War. After all, a “culmination event” means the end, and if this is the end of certain characters’ story arcs, there could very well be some harmony with how those arcs began in the first place.

Where Is Everybody?

The trailer shows Tony on a spaceship heading back to Earth from Titan, where everyone but Nebula was dusted before his eyes. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), meanwhile, is wearing the character’s “Ronin” costume and appears to be in Japan—where he’s discovered by Natasha (Scarlett Johansson). Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) is shown out in the real world after last being seen trapped in the Quantum Realm during the snap, although it appears he does make his way down to Avengers HQ from San Francisco. Speaking of which, Avengers HQ appears to be held down by Steve (Chris Evans), Bruce (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Natasha.

Curious Combos

The Marvel Cinematic Universe likes to play around with unlikely pairings, andEndgameis no different. Notably, Natasha and Clint are back together, with the MCU having previously established a close bond between the two when they were working for S.H.I.E.L.D. back duringThe Avengers. So that’s a reunion pairing, but then we get a shot of Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Rhodes (Don Cheadle) fighting together, which I sincerely hope means those two are teaming up—after all, poor Teen Groot got dusted, so Rocket’s gotta fire fromsomebody’s shoulder. Then, finally, the end of the trailer teases the most curious pairing of them all: Captain Marvel and Thor. Speaking of which…

Captain Marvel Has Arrived

We knew Marvel had big plans forBrie Larson’s Captain Marvel, but those who have seen herorigin story filmknow that she wieldstremendouspower that will be of help to the Avengers. That film’s post-credits scene teased her arrival toEndgame, and this new trailer shows her interacting with Thor—another tremendously powerful hero—in a delightful way. Thor calls for his new weapon Stormbreaker, and Carol is unfazed. This delights Thor, and thus the audience. But I am curious to see if Carol is worthy to wield Stormbreaker. Could this scene be teasing a major action beat later on in the film? We’ll just have to see…

At long last, the Avengers have a uniform! PreviousAvengersfilms have mostly found the characters wearing their own, individual costumes, but in the final shots of this trailer we see the unified Avengers team wearing brand new uniforms sporting the Avengers logo. Pretty spiffy stuff, and proof positive that Tony and Steve will bury the hatchet—or at least agree to stop bickering long enough to bring their friends back to life.
