WithHenry Cavillofficially sharpening his swordforChad Stahelski’slong-awaitedHighlanderreboot, there’s never been a better time to revisit one of the franchise’s wildest entries –Highlander: Endgame, now streaming for free onPluto TV. Originally released in 2000,Endgameis both a sequel and a crossover, bridging the cult-classic film series that began with 1986’sHighlanderand the long-running TV show starringAdrian Paul. The movie brings togetherChristopher Lambert’sConnor MacLeodand Adrian Paul’s Duncan MacLeod for a battle that’s one part sword-slinging fantasy epic and one part melancholic family drama. It’s notThe Godfather Part II, but it is a critical link in theHighlandermythology – and a fascinating look at how the franchise tried to evolve.

Set in the modern day,Endgamefinds Connor living in seclusion after centuries of battling immortals.Duncan, his younger kinsman (though only in timeline, not experience), is still fighting the good fight. When an old foe namedJacob Kell(played with theatrical menace byBruce Payne) begins hunting immortals en masse, the two MacLeods must confront not just him, but the ancient rules that govern their immortal lives.

Why Should I Watch ‘Highlander: Endgame’?

Because the reboot is finally real – andit’s coming fast. And now we know he’ll be joined by none other thanRussell Crowe, who Collider exclusively revealedhas signed on in a major role. Production is set to begin this fall, with Stahelski promising a sweeping saga that spans from 1500s Scotland to present-day New York and Hong Kong. “It’s a bit of a love story – but not how you think,” Stahelski teased. “There’s big opportunity for action… We’re bringing it forward.”

WatchingHighlander: Endgamenow is a perfect warm-up for what’s to come. You get to see where the franchise tried to go last time it attempted a generational hand-off, and you’ll catch glimpses of what Cavill’s MacLeod might carry forward: the burden of immortality, the pain of loss, and, of course, the weight of knowing “there can be only one.”
