With a title likeBilly Lynn’s Long Halftime Walkand a leading man by the name ofJoe Alwyn, a newcomer on the Hollywood scene, awareness of this film is going to come down to name recognition for two-time Oscar-winning directorAng Leeand any buzz that gets started at the film’s upcoming premiere at theNew York Film Festival. Certainly there will be a contingent of audience members who are familiar with novelistBen Fountain’s award-winning title by the same name, but for the rest of us, we’re going to need a bit of hand-holding just to sell us on exactly what this movie is about.
Enter a new behind-the-scenes featurette that dives into the cutting-edge technology behind Lee’s latest film. Lee pushed the limits of filmmaking tech inLife of Pi(another film that put a fresh-faced newcomer in the lead,Suraj Sharma) but this featurette shows that he’s not content with simply repeating previous successes. Audiences can expect a new kind of film experience, almost a virtual reality one, when the awkwardly titled film debuts later this year. It was shot in 3D and intended for a high frame rate presentation in 4K, a decision which shows the lengths to which the production has gone to bring about Lee’s singular vision of providing an immersive, deeply moving experience for the audience.
