It’s really good time to be Disney. Hot on the heels ofZootopia’s streak of box office dominance (it’s still holding strong at #6),The Jungle Bookremake is sitting pretty in the #1 spot for the third week in a row. DirectorJon Favreau’s live-action/CGI hybrid visually spectacular retelling of the classic Rudyard Kipling story holds over strong with another $42.4 Million, dropping a mere 30% domestically, which brings its domestic total up to $252M. Globally,The Jungle Bookhas now earned $684.4M.
Next week, Disney is all but guaranteed to hand the top spot to themselves whenCaptain America: Civil Warkicks off the summer movie season with its domestic debut. The latest in Marvel’s ever-expanding cinematic universe,JoeandAnthony Russo’s epic superhero showdown is already cleaning up overseas, where it grossed $202.2M in its first week of release, falling just shy ofAvengers:Age of Ultron’s international debut last year.

Back on the domestic front, the week’s new releases didn’t fare so well – to put it into perspective;TheJungle Bookmade $20M more than all three of them combined…in its third week. Key and Peele’s feature film debutKeanucame out on top of the new releases, landing the third spot at the box office with $9.35M (the underperformingThe Huntsman: Winters Waris estimated to just barely sneak into the #2 spot with $9.39M). New Line’s kitten-centric comedy reunitesKeegan-Michael KeyandJordan Peelewith theirKey and PeeledirectorPeter Atenciofor a two-hander about a couple of thoroughly suburban cousins who have to infiltrate the criminal world to rescue a beloved titular kitten,Keanu. The film was met with mixed reviews, but is well on its way to returning its estimated $15M budget.
Gary Marshall’sMother’s Day, whose reported budget of $25M was no doubt spent on the star-studded cast includingJennifer Aniston,Julia Roberts,Timothy Olyphant,Jason Sudeikis, andKate Hudsonsuffered in its first frame with $8.3M debut. The latest in Marshall’s A-list holiday-centric vignette films, Mother’s Day follows the intertwining stories of three generations of women in the week leading up to Mother’s Day. The comedy falls short of Marshall’s previous ensemble efforts –Valentine’s Day, which opened to $56.3M in 2010, andNew Year’s Eve, which earned a more modest $13M in 2011.
The week’s final new release, the animated family film Ratchet & Clank, also saw a stunted debut, landing in the #7 spot with $4.8M. Based on the video game series about a cat and his robot on a mission to save the universe, Focus Features and Gramercy’s animated adventure features the voices ofPaul Giamatti,John Goodman,Bella Thorne,Sylvester Stallone, andRosario Dawson.
