While CBS has unfortunatelycancelled the second spin-off ofThe Neighborhood, which was to center on Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney) and Marty (Marcel Spears),Cedric the Entertainercomes bearing amazing news for die-hard fans of the brotherly duo. The series star confirmed viaan interview with TV Linethatthe scrapped follow-up will be worked into Season 8 ofThe Neighborhood, meaning that the events of the Season 7 finale will not be ignored since it also served as the backdoor pilot for the spin-off.
Cedric, who co-wrote the backdoor pilot, mentioned thatthe next season of the beloved sitcomwill incorporate major parts of Malcolm’s new life in Venice. And even without a spin-off,The Neighborhoodteam, who “love the idea that Malcolm has moved there,” still “wanted to [make] this transition and show the growth of the Fuse Box, which is why we have Marty going back and forth [from Pasadena to Venice].”

Explaining further, the EP noted that the transition represents the show’s evolution and that of Calvin (Cedric) and Tina’s (Tichina Arnold) adult sons. He also added:
“We love the fact that we can have Malcolm going back and forth, a little nervous about living on his own — when people feel like, ‘Oh, this will be great! I’ve got my own house,’ and then they still find themselves at their mama’s house! We feel like we’ve got great stories [to tell] in that space — and, of course, the opportunity to use that [Venice] set from time to time to be able to go tell stories there.”
Will ‘The Neighborhood’ Season 8 Feature Other Characters From the Cancelled Spin-Off?
The NeighborhoodSeason 7 finale saw quite a cheery character ensemble, and some of those characters, including the Butler boys, may appear again in future episodes of the CBS show, according to Cedric. One such character is Malcolm’s literary agent Lisa, portrayed byAngelique Cabral, and another is Bruce, “a tech millionaire who is a mix of unjustified confidence and social ineptitude,” portrayed byJustin Long. Two others also featured in the backdoor pilot wereKara Royster’s Matisse, “Malcolm’s new neighbor and a would-be influencer,” andHunter King’s Bellamy, a “dark, sardonic and often under the influence of edibles.” However, it remains uncertain if the duo will appear in Season 8 ofThe Neighborhood.
Cedric also praisedMax Greenfield’s (who stars as Dave Johnson) performance in the backdoor pilot, saying: “He came in and brought a lot of that neuroticism— that crazy, hyper-energy that Max brings [to Dave] — as this tech billionaire guy. He killed it! Those two together were hilarious at all times.”
The Neighborhoodhas been renewed for an eighth and final season, set to air in the 2025-26 TV season. Stay tuned to Collider for further updates.
