Rumors of anAmerican Psychoremake have been in the works for some time, but sources seem to favor one actor to take on the role made famous byChristian Bale. The Hollywood Reporter announced that the production is eyeingThe White Lotusactor,Patrick Schwarzenegger, to take on the infamous part of Patrick Bateman fromBret Easton Ellis’ breakout novel. The outlet noted that Schwarzenegger didn’t name-drop the film specifically, but did mention the director of the upcoming film.
“What’s on the very top of it is to work with a person like that, like Luca,” Schwarzenegger stated.Luca GuadagninohelmedTimothée Chalamet’stour de force inCall Me By Your NameandZendaya’srecent triumph inChallengers. Many names were reportedly in consideration for hisAmerican Psychoventure, includingAustin Butler, but Schwarzenegger seems to be in big contention. The actor also said, “I’d love nothing more” in response to a fan asking if he would consider taking on the project on X (formerly Twitter).

Considering Schwarzenegger’s recent foray into HBO, it isn’t a total shock that he is being eyed for one of the most controversial parts put to the page. InMike White’sdark exploration of privilege, Schwarzenegger was one ofThe White LotusSeason 3’s standouts. The actor pushed the envelope in his jaw-dropping storyline.
Saxon Ratliff Is a Precursor to Patrick Bateman
In his few years in the entertainment industry, Patrick Schwarzenegger has set himself apart from his famous father. His first big profile television role was in the first season ofGen V, where his death set off a dramatic course of events. However, it may have been his role inThe White Lotusthat caught the studios’ attention.
Schwarzenegger turned heads as Saxon Ratliff, another questionable character who made his way toThe White Lotus. Season 3 set the series in Thailand, where Saxon and his two siblings go on an odyssey of sorts. But unlike the incest fakeout inThe White LotusSeason 2,Saxon is at the center of a real and disconcerting encounter with his brother. Season 2 showed a sexual encounter between a supposed uncle and his nephew, only for it to be confirmed that they weren’t related. That isn’t the case for the Ratliffs, who were another shocking example of privilege.

The White Lotusis thematically extremely similar toAmerican Psycho, which also uses shock to demonstrate a point. In Bret Easton Ellis’ novel, Patrick Bateman envisions graphic and brutal depictions of violence, which are juxtaposed with his Rolodex of luxury items. Ellis illustrated the violence of capitalism in his book, and it waseventually adapted for the big screen in the 2000 film.American Psychois notoriously difficult to adapt because of how cerebral the narrative is, but it may be time to take another crack at it.
American Psychois still in early talks, but fans can stream the original film on Amazon Prime. Stay tuned at Collider for further updates on the remake.
