From the moment we got a decent look atMike Colterin the role ofLuke CageinJessica Jones, the prospect of a full series centered on the seemingly indestructible hero was about as exciting as anything on the TV or streaming horizon. When Netflix announced that each episode was named after a song by beloved New York rap duo Gang Starr, the Marvel series immediately won a permanent place in my heart, even before its September 30th release date.
A new social media short, called “Street Level Hero Music,” one of a series that Netflix will be releasing this month, highlights not only the influence of Gang Starr but as well as all hip-hop and rap music on the series. Iconic MCs like Method Man and A$AP Ferg stump for the series while speaking with A Tribe Called Quest’sAli Shaheed Muhammadand Ghostface Killah colleagueAdrian Younge, who crafted the series' soundtrack. There’s even a short discussion of how Luke Cage embodies the Wu-Tang Clan classic “Bring da Ruckus.” You can take a look at the short below, but I must warn you: it will not help your impatience for September 30th to arrive even one little bit.
