It’s Time for ‘Mortal Kombat’!

This isn’t the first figure McFarlane Toys has done for the popular fighting game franchise. They previously did a whole series ofMortal Kombat 11figures, which included famous characters like Shao Kahn, Nightwolf, and Sub-Zero, alongside guest characters like Spawn and The Joker. WhileMortal Kombathas always been a game franchise first, it has had quite a success storyoutside its virtual fighting arena.

This, of course, included the1995 filmthat brought the series into the mainstream. While it has a split 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film made over $122 million worldwide. This led to a sequel,Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, being made in 1997.That film killed the franchise in live-action for over two decadesuntil thehard-R reboot came out in 2021. Before the 2021 film, thefranchise was handicapped by the dreaded PG-13 rating. What the new version lacked in story and character depth, it made up for in blood-soaked dismemberment and carnage. It was also one of the films that proved the worth of the theatrical model after the pandemic, making over $84 million worldwide, despiteMortal Kombatbeing a same day-and-date release as streaming.
