The objection that Netflix has become more interested in its own programming than maintaining a decent library of new and old classics becomes a bit louder with the announcement of what is leaving the streaming site come July. A lot of great titles are getting cut, mostly in movies, and from the looks of what’s coming to Netflix in July, the balance will not be corrected.
Top of the list on this exodus is seven of theStar Trekmovies, including three or four of the best ones:Star Trek: The Motion Picture,Star Trek: Generations, andStar Trek: The Wrath of Khan. On top of this, there’s twoStanley Kubrickclassics (A Clockwork Orange,2001: A Space Odyssey), one ofJohn Ford’s best films (The Quiet Man), and two of the best comedies of the aughts (Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky BobbyandTeam America: World Police) that are expiring. In comparison, the fact that more minor but meaningful works likeBulworth,Witness,Best in Show,Mouse Hunt, andThe Central Park Fiveisn’t quite as sad, but taken as a whole, this is a major cut.
