What, you thought becauseStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerwas concluding the story of the Skywalker family we were done with a galaxy far, far away? Disney just released its absurdly stacked film slate stretching all the way into 2027, and that includes a new trilogy ofStar Warsfilms, with installments hitting theaters on June 09, 2025, August 08, 2025, and July 02, 2025. For six straight years, we’ll be alternating between aStar Warsmovie andnewAvatarmoviesin December.
Now, what theseStar Warsfilmsare, exactly, remains to be seen. There’s always the chance they are three standalone films set in theStar Warsuniverse, but after the box office woes ofSolo, Disney seems to be out of that particular game for now. Far more likely is a new connected trilogy. But which one?

Right now, Disney reportedly has two separate trilogies in the works. One comes fromThe Last JedidirectorRian Johnson, who last offeredan updatein February simply to say he’s “still working” on the trilogy. The director, who will write and direct the first of the three films, is currently in post-production on his murder mysteryKnives Out, but this seems the more likely option considering plans werefirst announcedback in November of 2017.
The other option is the trilogy that’s set to come fromDavid BenioffandD.B. Weiss, the filmmakers that developedGeorge R.R. Martin’sA Song of Ice and Firebooks into HBO’s fantasy mega-hitGame of Thrones. Benioff and Weiss' trilogy was announceda year ago, with not much of an update since as they were hard at work bringingGame of Thronesto its season 8 conclusion. However, Lucasfilm presidentKathleen Kennedydidnotethat Benioff and Weiss are “working very closely” with Johnson to map out not just a trilogy, but the next decade ofStar Warsstorytelling. Here’s what she had to say:

“We’re looking at whether we can move massively in one direction or the other. It’s stillStar Wars, and holding on to the DNA of whatGeorge Lucascreated is still very important to us. I think this is a huge opportunity to step into the galaxy in a little bit different part of the timeline.”
