Following in the wake of successful seriesTheWalking DeadandFear the Walking Dead, a third series/second spinoff is in the works. The untitled show already has a 10-episode order from parent network AMC and is expected to go into production this summer for a debut sometime next year. So for theTWDfaithful, it sounds like you might just have new post-apocalyptic content to keep you occupied year-round, or close to it.
AsTV Linereports, the new series is a co-creation ofScott M. Gimpleand writerMatthew Negrete, who will serve as showrunner. AMC described the untitled series; it will “feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come of age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.”
In other words, it sounds like this series will jump even further ahead into the future, exploring what Gimple called an “unseen pocket ofThe Walking Deaduniverse steeped in a new mythology:
“[It’s] a very cool way to celebrate a ‘Decade of the Dead’ on TV and over 15 years of Robert Kirkman’s brilliant comic,” said Gimple in a statement. “Matt Negrete is one of the best writer-producers inTWD’s long history — I’m thrilled to be working beside him to tell stories unlike we’ve seen before, taking our first step into an even larger world.”
David Madden, AMC’s head of programming, had this to say:
“We’re thrilled that the Dead will keep walking into a new corner of the post-apocalyptic world, a corner that will present stories and characters unlike any thatThe Walking Deadhas dramatized thus far, and that is bound to excite one of the most passionate fanbases in television.”
The ninth season ofThe Walking Deadjust recently concluded, but it’ll only be a two-month wait for fans until the fifth season ofFear the Walking Deadarrives. Perhaps that gap in the programming run will be filled by the new, untitled series in 2020, or perhaps that’s when fans can expect to see the planned TV movies set inThe Walking Deaduniverse and starring franchise anchorAndrew Lincolnas Rick Grimes. Time will tell!
