EntertainmentOne and Summit Entertainment have released the first teaser trailer forNow You See Me 2, and its up to the same old magical hijinks with a few new faces.Mark Ruffalo,Woody Harrelson,Jesse Eisenberg,Dave Franco,Michael Caine, andMorgan Freemanall return for the sequel, and whileIsla Fisherisn’t returning as Henley,Lizzy Caplanhas stepped in as the newest member of the Four Horsemen,.Daniel Radcliffealso joins the cast the new enemy, Walter Mabry, “a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet.“Jon M. Chusteps into the director’s chair forNow You See Me 2, taking over fromLouis Letterier.
I got a kick out ofNow You See Me, and it looks like they’re sticking very close to original formula for the sequel – flashy illusions and gimmicks; bright, vibrant cinematography; and relying heavily on the charisma of the leading cast. It was a good formula, and Lionsgate, who isalready developing a third film, obviously agrees. Here’s what irks me though. Fisher didn’t have a lot to do in the first film, and the trailer makes absolutely no effort to explain the fact that she’s been replaced. In fact, it’s almost egregious how much the trailer goes out of its way to ignore it, the text reads “They’re back,” as Caine exclaims “So nice to see you all again.” Combine that with the fact thatMelanie Laurent’s character – essentially the only other woman who didn’t have a marginal role in the first film – is also not returning, and it’s just kind of an icky vibe on how they’re handling female characters. All the same, the teaser is a lot of fun and it’s a hoot to watch Radcliffe, the man behind the world’s most famous wizard, botch a simple magic trick.
