Say what you will about the wide-ranging quality of Netflix films, the streaming giant is unafraid to take big swings in a variety of genres in a way that major movie studios rarely do anymore. And as those remaining studios continue to get gobbled up or merged into one mega-studio, that diverse well of creativity begins to dry up in favor of safe sameness and adaptations of already familiar properties and brands.

On the flipside, Netflix also gives us movies likeRim of the World, an alien invasion/action-adventure flick that looks like a lot of easy, breezy summer movie fun, but also feels like a melting pot of a bunch of original ideas (and even shot-for-shot scenes) that came before it rather than its own unique idea. It centers on a group of kids whose summer camp antics are interrupted by the end of the world, courtesy of alien invaders. It’s up to them to trek 70 miles and fire up Earth’s satellite defense system if they have any hope of saving the world. It looks fun, but it also looks likeITmeetsThe GooniesmeetsStranger ThingsmeetsIndependence DaymeetsAttack the Blocketc, etc.

Four misfit campers must band together and conquer their fears in order to save the world during an alien invasion. Rim Of The World invades May 24, only on Netflix.

Here’s the official synopsis forRim of the World:

Summer camp at Rim of the World has barely begun when four misfit teenagers – Alex, ZhenZhen, Dariush, and Gabriel – find they’ve got bigger problems to face than learning how to canoe and climb ropes when aliens suddenly invade the planet. Alone in a campground once teeming with people, the kids are unexpectedly entrusted with a key that carries the secret to stopping the invasion. Without any adults or electronics to help guide the way,  it’s clear what they must do: band together, conquer their fears, and save the world. An epic action-adventure directed by McG (Charlie’s Angels).
