What’s ‘The Proposal’ About?
The Proposalfollows Margaret Tate (Bullock), a high-powered book editor who is facing deportation to her native Canada. To avoid the situation for the sake of her career, Margaret lies about being engaged to marry her hapless assistant Andrew (Reynolds). Andrew agrees to the charade but imposes a few conditions of his own, including flying to Alaska to meet his eccentric family. Margaret discovers a whole new side to Andrew as she loosens up around his family.But with a suspicious immigration official always lurking nearby, they must stick to their wedding plan despite hilarious mishaps.
The movie, directed byAnne Fletcherand written byPeter Chiarelli,garnered mixed reviews upon its release, while Reynolds and Bullock’s central performances were praised, it was criticized for being too formulaic. It has a 45 percentRotten Tomatoesscore from the critics, but the audience was more generous with a 68 percent rating. Interestingly, the movie was a box office hit, grossing over $317 million at the box office against a budget of $40 million, and bagged Bullock a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress.
