The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were held this evening, and they threw a couple of curveballs into what’s been an incredibly unpredictable race. Quite possibly the biggest winner of the night wasIdris Elba, who became the first actor to win a Screen Actors Guild Award having not been nominated for an Oscar in the same category. Elba was named Best Supporting Actor for his terrific work inBeasts of No Nation, and he also took home Best Actor in a TV Miniseries or Movie forLuther.
While many were looking forThe Big Shortor maybe evenStraight Outta Comptonto take the top prize,Spotlightearned the very well deserved Best Ensemble award, which is SAG’s equivalent of Best Picture. The Best Actor and Best Actress trophies were nabbed by exactly who you think—Leonardo DiCaprioandBrie Larson—but the TV side had some shakeups of its own. For the third year in a row,Downton Abbeyinexplicably took the Best Ensemble in a Drama Series prize, robbingMad Menof a final season win. In fact,Matthew Weiner’s iconic AMC drama went home empty handed—Jon Hammcouldn’t even manage one last win like he did at the Emmys, as the Best Actor prize went instead toKevin SpaceyforHouse of Cards.
So what do these wins mean for Oscar? Well we were really only looking for clarity in Best Supporting Actress and Best Ensemble, as the others seems fairly locked down.Alicia Vikandertook Supporting Actress tonight, so she may very well have the edge when it comes to the Oscars, but Ensemble proved to muddle this Best Picture race even further. Just asThe Big Shortlooked to be gaining serious momentum,Spotlightcomes roaring back with a big win. It ain’t over until it’s over, so these next couple of weeks should be interesting.
