The hot, hell-like landscape known as The Nether is one of the most unforgiving locations inMinecraft. From its endless days to the lack of Overworld comforts, a journey through the Nether Portal requires planning and much prep. Although it lacks the clear narrative ofA Minecraft Movie, through inference and discovery, the Nether is full of intrigue and focal points to unearth. It is also the home to some of the most useful resources in the game, and essential if a player wants to progresstowards the goal of defeating the Ender Dragon- the unofficial final boss of the game. The dimension itself is barren of most life forms, with only those who have adapted to the temperature able to survive, which gives the impression that the version of the Nether available to visit in the gameisn’t always what it used to be like.

The Nether Is the Opposite of the Overworld

The Nether is one of three dimensions available to explore in Minecraft, the other two being the Overworld and The End. Traveling between these dimensions requires portals and heat. For the Nether, this includes obsidian blocks lit with the famous flint and steel - whichJack Blackannounces right at the beginning ofA Minecraft Movie. Traveling in the Nether will affect one’s position in the Overworld except for one caveat, one block in the Nether is eight blocks in the Overworld. This may encourage a player to travel through the Nether to make a significant distance; however, it’s unpredictable and unforgiving. Sandwiched between a floor and ceiling of bedrock, an unbreakable material inMinecraft, are lava pools, sharp rock cliffs, and tight passageways.

The lack of sunlight means there are no day and night cycles, which makes beds redundant. Trying to place one in the Nether will cause it to explode. Instead, a respawn anchor can be used to set a spawn point. Ittruly feels like a complete contrast to the Overworld, almost reflecting an underbelly, trapped in this eternal heat. Within the Nether, there is evidence of past civilizations through abandoned structures such as fossils of large Nether Fortresses and Bastion Remnants. It gives intrigue into what the Nether perhaps once was, and if it was always this hot hellscape.

The Nether Is Home to Some of the Most Dangerous Mobs and Precious Materials

Aside from the Piglins seen inA Minecraft Movie, a number of hostile mobs live in the Nether. Many of these have adapted to the blistering climate shown through their fire immunity. Flying Ghasts shoot fireballs at the player if they notice them, and Magma Cubes mimic Slimes from the Overworld. Endermen and Skeletons can both be found in the Nether, as can Blaze, a necessary mob to defeatfor any player playing to travel to The End. Piglins are the central antagonists inA Minecraft Movieand when they are seen in the Nether on-screen, they are situated in a Bastian Remnant within a Nether Waste biome (one of the five biomes within the Nether). This islikely why the movie doesn’t show any other mobs native to the Netherand opens up the possibility of exploring the dimension in more detail in any potential sequels.

However, perhaps the most valuable reason to visit the Nether inMinecraftis to get your hands on one of the game’s strongest materials, netherite. By collecting netherite scraps from ancient debris, a player can use a smithing table to upgrade their diamond tools. This wasonly added to the game in 2020, so its lack of inclusion in the movie could be put down to timing. However, the Piglins were added in the same update, and they are the core of the movie. It is likely that this was overly technical anddiamond weapons are so iconictoMinecraftas a brand that they were the chosen weapons for the heroes.A Minecraft Moviespends a large amount of time in the Nether, and the threat of turning the Overworld into a Nether Wasteland is the main adversity.Yet, the movie barely scratches the surface of the extensive nature of the dimension.
