We’re just hours away fromAvengers: Endgamefinally arriving in theaters revealing exactly what happened to the heroes who got dusted at the end ofInfinity War, but there’s one hero we know we’ll be seeing for sure before Phase 4 wraps up –Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, aka your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Everyone’s favorite web-slinger is having a bit of a resurgence in recent years, especially on the heels of the Oscar-winningSpider-Man into the Spider-Verse, and fans won’t have to wait long for more withSpider-Man: Far from Homelanding theaters in a few short months. The first post-EndgameMCU film also introducesJake Gyllenhaalas Mysterio, the iconic comic book villain, who we can expect to strike up something of an avuncular relationship with Peter Parker.
“If Tony Stark was sort of the mentor in the previous films, we thought it would be interesting to play Mysterio as almost like the cool uncle,” directorJon WattstoldEW, who also debuted a new image of the do side-by-side. And apparently, there’s a good amount of trust since Peter’s mask is off! It probably helps that they’re introduced by Nick Fury, who also hooks Peter up with his new black-and-red suit.
The pair meets up in Europe, where Peter and his high school classmates journey for a bit of fun in the sun. “Peter’s ready for a vacation at the beginning of this movie, to say the least,” Watts said. “This film is about the world telling him, ‘It’s time for you to step up and grow up, kid,’ and he’s saying, ‘But I still want to be a kid and go on vacation.’”
ButFar from Homewon’t just be forcing Peter to grow up, it’s also taking inspiration from some adult action movies this time around. When it came toHomecoming, the creative team was pretty open about the heavy influence from high school classics like theJohn Hughescanon, but forFar from Home, Watts is referencing a whole different vibe: superspy.
“We were doing a bunch of shots that looked like they were out ofThe Bourne Identityor some exciting European action-travel movie,” Watts explained. Ultimately, that influence translated into an on-set gag for the cast and crew – whenever they nailed a take, Watts would play the Bourne theme song, Moby’s ‘Extreme Ways’.
