Star Wars: The Force Awakenscannot be stopped. TheJ.J. Abrams-directed sequel continues to ratchet up the box office charts, and as of today it has officially passedThe Avengersto becoming the fourth-highest grossing film on the domestic chart with only $1 million and change to go before it surpassesJurassic World. Indeed, with a total domestic haul of $652 million in just two weeks in release, there’s little doubt thatThe Force Awakenswill be one of the biggest films in history.
But that #4 title will be short-lived. This weekend, the picture will overtakeJurassic World’s $652.2 million andTitanic’s $658.6 million domestic totals to become the second highest grossing film in history, with onlyAvatar’s $760.5 million domestic gross left standing in the way of the crown. Can it surpass thatAvatarnumber? It’s a milestone in and of itself that the movie is bestingTitanic’s 18-year-old #2 slot, and given that there are still many, many weeks to go beforeStar Warsleaves theaters, thatAvatarnumber seemsverydo-able.

So how are things on the worldwide chart? Well at $1.33 billion the film currently holds the #8 slot, having just surpassedFrozen’s $1.27 billion gross. Next up is the $1.34 international total ofHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2and thenAvengers: Age of Ultron’s $1.4 billion take, which should fall pretty quickly. The real numbers to keep an eye on areTitanic’s $2.18 billion andAvatar’s $2.78 billion, which hold the #2 and #1 slots respectively.Jurassic Worldholds the #3 position on the worldwide chart, but at $1.66 billion it fell far short of touching evenTitanic’s gross. However, given how quicklyThe Force Awakenshas been raking in the dough, $2 billion is in no way a pipe dream. And with the film still yet to open in China, there’s a whole new run of potential box office dollars waiting to roll in.
Stay tuned, folks. This ride is far from over. If you’re curious, I’ve included the all-time Top 10 charts as they stand now for both domestic and worldwide grosses below.
