Just like 20th Century Fox schedulingFantastic Four 2before the success or failure of the first was even determined, Paramountplanted flags a few years outfor a newTerminatortrilogy to begin withGenisys. Again, just like with Fox, the studio has now droppedTerminator 2from its release slate following the poor box office performance ofGenisys.

According toExhibitor Relations, which also first reported the news ofFantastic Four 2getting dropped from its scheduled release, the nextTerminatorsequel has lost its release date with no word whether or not it’ll be reset at another point in time. There’s also no word yet on if or when the same fate will fall the rebooted trilogy’s third installment, which is, as far as we know, still scheduled for June 22, 2025.

For now, Paramount has givenBaywatchtheMay 19, 2017 slot. The movie reboot is a hard R comedy starringDwayne Johnson,Zac Efron,Alexandra Daddario, modelKelly RohrbachandIlfenesh Hadera.Quantico’sPriyanka Choprais being eyed to feature, while Johnson teased more announcements are on the way.

Back in October, Skydance Media Chief Creative OfficerDana Goldbergassured everyonethat the nextTerminatorsequel wasn’t “on hold, so much as re-adjusting.” So, perhaps the studio does in fact have plans to pick up where they left off at some future point. However, with a 25% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a third place debut over its opening weekend in theaters with just over $27 million, perhaps it’s better off leaving this one in the gutters.

Terminator GenisysintroducedGame of Thrones’Emilia Clarkeas the new Sarah Connor opposite the return ofArnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator. The reworked timeline also featureJai Courtneyas Kyle Reese,Jason Clarkeas John Connor, andByung-hun Leeas the next T-1000 in addition to fellow cast membersJ.K. SimmonsandMatt Smith. It’s unclear whether or not this franchise is actually dead, but this release switch-a-roo doesn’t look good. Still, we should all keep our ears perked.
