Of course, no matter how many media giants enter the streaming arena, Netflix is the reigning king of content, which means each new month means a roster of new movies, throwback favorites, and original series.

Don’t let the epic runtime or period setting deter you, Lee’s vivid visuals and expertly laid psychological thrills are immediately absorbing and the film’s twisting tale of espionage makes the minutes fly by. Set in WWII during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai,Lust, Cautionexplores the passionate affair between a spy and a collaborator in an era of political horrors. It’s meditative but never stuffy – in fact, the film was given an NC17 rating for all that hot/horrific content – and Lee uses the tangles and tensions of their irresistible affair to explore the boundaries of patriotism and nationalism, the power of desire, and who has to bear the scars of love and war when it’s all said and done.

And just in time to help you get into a sunny summer vibe,Amy Heckerling’s Beverly Hills reinvention ofEmmais now on Netflix. Yes, the lewks are still on point, the dialogue is quotable as it gets, but the film’s longevity is mostly due to Heckerling’s knack for characters, infusing each one with a spark of humanity that never goes out of style.
V for Vendetta

The Wachowskis also produced, bringing some of their production team with them, including stunt coordinatorsDavid LeitchandChad Stahelski, who, as is their way, delivered some truly stunning action sequences.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Perhaps the most unsung of the Apatow-produced early 2000s comedy gems,Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Storyis one of those comedies that’s guaranteed to make me howl with laughter every time I put it on. Directed byJake Kasdan, the film starsJohn C. Reillyas an amalgam of the old-school rock star; fuelled by a history of tragedy, blessed with musical genius, and tormented by addiction… but you know, it’s all hilarious.Walk Hardskewers the sentimental biopic so savagely and accurately, you can never really un-see the playbook tropes. But if you’re looking for something to make you laugh, really laugh, you can’t go wrong with this absurd gem.

Spike Leeis one of the busiest filmmakers in the business, but no matter how much he makes, you never stop getting hyped for his next project. Especially his next one,Da 5 Bloods, a new Netflix original that follows for African-American veterans who make their way back to Vietnam in search of the treasure they buried there decades ago. On top of being a legendary filmmaker, Lee’s one of our best, most incisive social commentators and his last feature, 2018’sBlacKkKlansmantraveled back to America’s recent past to make gutting observations about systemic racism and how little progress we’ve truly made, so one imagine’s he’ll have plenty to say about the legacy of one of our most horrific wars. The other lowkey hype factor here for me isJonathan Majors, who gave a stunning performance in last year’s slept on stunnerThe Last Black Man in San Franciscoand co-stars here alongsideChadwick Boseman. One of Lee’s other gifts is he’s a so-called “actor’s director” who consistently mines outstanding performances from his stars and I can’t wait to see what they do together.
