Lionsgate has announced a variety of cast members to star in the franchise’s prequel, but before you indulge in Haymitch’s story in the 2nd Quarter Quell, you can watch where this saga all began, as the original trilogy has found a new streaming home next month.
The Hunger Gamesand its three sequels,Catching FireandMockingjay Part 1 and Part 2,will enter HBO Max next month. These films are based on the same books and starredJennifer Lawrence,Josh Hutcherson,Liam Hemsworth,Woody Harrelson,Elizabeth Banks,Stanley Tucci, andDonald Sutherland.Ever since the first movie was released in 2012, all four films have generated over $2.9 billion at the global box office, plus it received a lot of praises from fans and critics alike onRotten Tomatoes, withCatching Firedescribed as the best film in the franchise with a high critics score of 90% and a high audience score of 89%.
Since the films ended in 2015, many assumed this was the franchise’s end. But that changed when Suzzane Collins announced a prequel in 2019 titledThe Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. This prequel took place during the 10th Hunger Games and told the story of President Snow when he was a kid and how the foundations of what made the games a spectacle became a reality. Sunrise on the Reapingwas first announced in 2024.It follows Haymitch Abernathy’s story of how he won the 50th Hunger Games. This Hunger Games was different as it was the Quarter Quell and for this year, the pool of tributes have been doubled. This would be the franchise’s fifth book/sixth film, focusing on propaganda and “the power of those who control the narrative.”
Filming for this upcoming movie is set to start in June 2024.
