With 2015 winding down, eyes are turning toward the blockbusters of 2016, one of the most anticipated of which isDavid Yates' adaptation ofEdgar Rice Burroughs' famed tale of Tarzan, entitledThe Legend ofTarzan. The film starsAlexander Skarsgardas the titular man of the jungle, withMargot Robbieplaying his beloved Jane, and Warner Bros. gave us a gander at both late last night, via USA Today, with the first two images of the duo. Not surprisingly, the images are pretty steamy, one focusing on the couple seemingly about to embrace while the other makes a point of showing off Skarsgard’s chiseled abdomen. So, we got a good look at what will certainly be a heated romance between the two lead characters, but not much else about Yates' world has been revealed, which is probably for the best until a trailer makes its way around. You can check out the first two images at the bottom of this post.
The film co-starsChristoph Waltzas the nefarious Captain Rom, which is both reassuring and a bit pestering, as it’d be nice to see Waltz playing a less villainous character after his roles inSpectreandBig Eyes; one could countThe Zero Theoremas a break, but I personally could barely make it through the first 30 minutes ofTerry Gilliam’s latest.Djimon Hounsou,Samuel L. Jackson, andJohn Hurtalso appear in supporting roles, but the big draw here is Yates, who handled the post-Prisoner of AzkabanHarry Potterfilms with stylish aplomb. All of the Potter films that Yates helmed have stood the test of time, and remain immensely entertaining, if not exactly as galvanic and wildly unpredictable asAlfonso Cuaran’s work onPrisoner of Azkaban. Though there’s not much sign of it here, one must hope that the director will bring a similar visual fluidity and effective sense of tone to the story of the man who was raised like a wild beast of the jungle.
