The Friday box office numbers have arrived, and as expected,Finding Doryis performing (ahem) swimmingly. According toBox Office Mojo, the movie pulled in an estimated $13.4 million on Friday looking at a four-day right around $52 million. That would bring the Pixar’s film domestic total to almost $400 million in three weeks and over $500 million worldwide.
Of course, everyone expectedDoryto be a moneymaker; the question was how much. What is unexpected this weekend are the higher than predicted numbers forThe Purge: Election YearandThe Legend of Tarzan.The Purgeraked in “$14.47 million on Friday and is now looking at a three-day weekend around $33 million and a four-day that could finish right around $37 million.” Additionally, it has the highest CinemaScore of anyPurgefilm to date, coming in at a respectable B+. (The Purgehad a “C” whileAnarchyhad a “B”).
The Legend of Tarzanis also impressing at the box office. The movie made $14 million on Friday and is now looking at a four-day weekend that could come in as high as $45 million. That’s not bad considering the lackluster reviews or thatAlexander Skarsgardisn’t exactly a household name. It also received an A- CinemaScore. However, the $45 million opening isn’t much when you look at $180 million price tag, so the film will definitely need some overseas help.
The film that’s flopping this weekend isSteven Spielberg’sThe BFG. Sadly, the movie only made $7 million on Friday and is looking at only about $23 million for the four-day weekend. That’s on par with its poor tracking, and it’s poised to be one of the biggest flops of Spielberg’s career with a budget of $140 million. It’s a shame because it’s quite a charming picture, and one that deserves to be seen on the big screen.
