Last month, Netflix officially announced the release date ofthe highly anticipatedMononoke The Movie: Chapter II— The Ashes of Rage. Now, the streamer is following up with the English sub trailer of the upcoming sequel, revealing a bit of its story and, once again, showcasing the franchise’sgorgeous art styleon a new adventure. The movie premiered in Japanese theaters earlier this year, and debuts onNetflixfor Western audiences just a couple of weeks from now, on August 14. you’re able to check out the trailer below.
Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II — The Ashes of Ragewill once againcenter around the Medicine Seller(voiced byHiroshi Kamiyain the original andCrispin Freemanin theEnglish dub) as they take on a hugesupernatural threat. This time, the mystic warrior returns to the inner chambers of the oppressive Ōoku after seeminglyridding the place of a sinister attack. The problem this time is that the new director of the place stimulates a competitive environment that increases the tension between its inhabitants.

As the trailer makes it clear, the new apparition will manifest itself as a series of blue flames that move in swarms, and it’s all fueled by members of the Ōoku.If the first movie had a chaotic energyand a fast-moving environment, the new installment seems to take the adventure even further, with several moments in which you need to do a double take to fully understand. It may look extremely chaotic, but fans ofMononokeare more than used to it at this point.
The ‘Mononoke’ Sequel Will Explore New Territory
One of the most curious aspects of the new movie is how it will contrast with the approach of the first one. Last year, inMononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain, the Ōokuwas cursed with a never-ending delugethat made it extremely wet — and the stylized rain was an important element of theanimation’s composition. Now, the sequel is going in a different direction altogether, introducing a fire-based villain that will probably make the story as dry as it can get. So it will be interesting to check out how the development affects the style of the adventure.
Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II — The Ashes of Rageis once again directed byKenji Nakamura, but this time the Japanese filmmaker shares directing duties withKiyotaka Suzuki(Evangelion 3.33). The screenplay is written byYasumi Atarashi(Star Wars: Visions). The production company responsible for theMononokefilm trilogy is Twin Engine, which is also behind titles likeZoom 100: Bucket List of the DeadandPsycho-Pass.
