In its third frame,Ryan Coogler’sBlack Pantheris now estimated to blow past the $500 million mark domestically after taking in another $65.7 million over the weekend. That would make Marvel’s latest only the second movie to cross that line afterThe Avengers, and it did it a week earlier than theJoss Whedon-helmed epic.Avengersended its run at $623 million domestically and $1.5 billion globally and thought Coogler’s film has a ways to go to top those numbers, it’s now looking more and more likely that it will indeed become the MCU’s biggest hit to date.
Meanwhile, in non-Disney land, things are looking relatively dire at thebox office.Red Sparrow, the sleek spy film fromFrancis LawrenceandJennifer Lawrence, looks to be in second with an estimated $17 million, while picking up some $26 million overseas. That’s not an entirely hopeful opening for a movie that likely has to make up something over $100 million to see a reasonable profit.Death Wish, the abominable and often quite boring remake fromEli Roth, will come in third with $13 million with no global money to back it up, though its relatively meager $30 million price tag makes finding a profit a bit more probable.

Game Nightcame in fourth with $10.7 million and one has to wonder if it will get an extra boost now that its directors,John Francis DalyandJonathan M. Goldstein, are confirmed to helm theFlashmovie for the DCEU. Similar blessings will likely not be visited onPeter Rabbit, which looks to bring in $10 million to land in fifth, though the movie doesn’t need much help after bringing in over $100 million worldwide. Still, you’re able to expectPeter Rabbitand at least one more of these to get tossed out of the top five next weekend whenA Wrinkle in Timearrives, which could also signalBlack Panther’s first shift to second place in the box office rankings. That doesn’t really matter, though. In three weeks,Black Pantherhas done what literally no other Marvel film has been able to do at the box office and its unclear if upcoming blockbusters likePacific Rim: UprisingorTomb Raiderwill be able to slow it down at all. After all, there are plenty more records Coogler and his film could break before it heads off to a healthy home-video run.
