With nary a worthy nemesis in sight,M. Night Shyamalan’sGlassis easily going to top the box office over the four-day Martin Luther King weekend, despite falling below its original $50-60 million expectations. The twisty comic book drama starringSamuel L. Jackson,Bruce Willis, andJames McAvoynabbed $40.5 million in its first weekend and is expected to come away with roughly $47 million when MLK day is said and done. If that estimate holds true, Shyamalan’s film would become the third best MLK weekend earner of all time behind 2014’sRide Along($48.6 million) and 2015’sAmerican Sniper($107.2 million).
Luckily for Universal, Shyamalan has been making movies on a micro-budget since his $5 million found-footage comebackThe Visitin 2015.Glass—which acts as a trilogy-capper following 2000’sUnbreakableand the surprise spin-offSplit—might be getting so-so reviews, but Shyamalan shot the film on a reported budget of just $23 million. Worldwide, the film has already nabbed $89.1 million, so financially at least this B Cinemascore-having bad boy is a hit.

Meanwhile, the Japanese anime importDragon Ball Super: Brolycontinues to kill it, raking in another $10.6 million for a $21 million gross overall since Wednesday. Written byDragon BallcreatorAkira Toriyama, the 20th feature-length film from the franchise has been a surprise box office and critical hit; Collider’s own Dave Trumborecalled it"an epic grudge match worthy of the big screen."
The Upside, while not nearly as loved by critics, remained super consistent in its second week, falling just 23% to earn another $15.6 million domestically. But the real miracle story of consistency has been the animated Marvel flickSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which fell a mere 19.8% in itssixth weekendin theaters, webbing up another $7.2 million.
