There was a considerable amount of interest surrounding the title ofAvengers 4, leading up to the big title reveal in the film’s first teaser. Part of that interest was due to comments from Marvel Studios presidentKevin Feige, who confirmedin an interview in 2017that the title toAvengers 4was in fact a spoiler, which was why it hadn’t been revealed yet. During the development ofAvengers3 and 4, Marvel initially called themAvengers: Infinity War Part IandAvengers: Infinity War Part II, but subsequently changed their minds owing to their desire to make each film stand alone.
The title ofAvengers 4was kept under wraps long afterAvengers: Infinity Warhit theaters, and it wasn’t until the film’s first teaser that we learned its true name:Avengers: Endgame.

For some, this title reveal was a bit anticlimactic. That’sthe spoiler? Endgame? So when Collider’s own Steve Weintraub spoke with Feige at the press day forCaptain Marvel, he asked Feige about why they kept the title under wraps for so long. Feige noted that the whole “spoiler” deal had been blown out of proportion, but still contends keeping the title under wraps was the right decision:
“Well, I think I’d said that it all had gotten blown out of proportion to some extent. But it was a spoiler, because if you knew beforeInfinity Warcame out that the next movie was calledEndgame, then you know that there wasn’t an ending toInfinity War. But that had been the title of the movie from the moment we conceived of doing the two films. In large part, because…it’s seeded right there. I mean, it’s seeded inUltron.”

Indeed, Feige and theRusso Brothersdid spend a great deal of the buildup toInfinity Warcontending that that movie andAvengers 4were separate, standalone films despite the fact that they were shot back-to-back. But when audiences sawInfinity War, it was clear that it was really just the first half of one big story. So Feige’s correct in noting that there really isn’t an ending toInfinity Warso much as a stopping point (though I suppose one could argue since it’s from Thanos’ point of view, he completes his goal at the film’s conclusion), but I’m not necessarily sure that I’d agree thatEndgameis a spoiler.
Fans who pay close attention were aware thatInfinity Warwas Part 1 of a two-part story, so obviouslyAvengers 4would be wrapping things up. Then again, general audiences who aren’t scouring the internet for spoilers day-in and day-out weren’t entirely clear thatInfinity Warwas a “Part 1”, thus the film’s ending had an even more substantial impact on them.
Regardless of the title, fans are clamoring to seeAvengers: Endgameto see, well, how it all ends. We’ll find out when the film hits theaters on April 26th.
